The Feast of the Pasteli (Greek variation of a brittle) in Amorgos took place for the first time 16 years ago, based on an idea of Ioannis Despotidis, when he was President of the “Cultural Association of Simonides”.
Early in the afternoon of the Feast, a large cauldron along with benches is set up in the Loza central square in the Chora. The members of the ” Cultural Association of Simonides” will prepare the pasteli mixture in the cauldron and then spread it on a lemon leaf, explaining in detail each stage of the process of the traditional way of making Amorgian pasteli and willingly answering questions.
After the completion of the process, which is accompanied by a concert of local music, the audience has the opportunity to taste the pasteli prepared in front of them.
The Festival continues with a treat of psimeni (baked) raki and an island feast with music and dancing, until the early morning hours.
Wonderful memories of joy accompany the numerous visitors of the island and the Amorgians who participate in the Festival, until next year.
